Why use Colocation? The Benefits.
For many companies, the question: 'Why should I consider a colocation solution?' can be a particularly challenging question to answer. Here's a short guide as to why you may wish to consider colocation.
This is a commonly asked question - what can colocation offer your business that a dedicated server cannot? Quite simply, you own your equipment and you can make changes to these when and how you want. Whilst colocation is not suitable for every business, it allows for a far greater level of flexibility and scalability and because there is simply an increased one-off fee to purchase the servers and equipment, rather than renting them, it can be a far more cost effective solution in the long run. It is much the same as buying / renting a property - buying a property is an expensive outlay but will save you money as part of a long term investment as you pay lower monthly fees and still remain with capital if you ever decide to upgrade or offload your equipment.
Data centres have the added bonus of extra security, with the best having a range of security facilities in place such as 24x7x365 on-site security, full site CCTV, a perimeter fence & mantraps. This is a significantly more secure way to host your equipment than in a server room in the office!
Quite simply, colocation can save your business money. By outsourcing your IT solutions, you can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds a month as you don't need the power, bandwidth and space to host your equipment in-house. Many companies find that as they expand, their bandwidth costs, in particular, become prohibitively expensive and significant cost savings can be made by moving to a dedicated co-location datacentre facility.
When things go wrong, it can have disastrous effects on your business, particularly for those who provide e-commerce services online. A day, an hour, even a minute of server downtime can lead to lost revenue and a loss of consumer trust in your company. The best dedicated colocation facilities offer dual power lines, modular equipment and backup systems, meaning that you can be assured your equipment will stay online even when something goes amiss.
When you host your servers with a reputable datacentre company, you have access to round the clock support for fully qualified technicians - meaning that if your equipment encounters any issues you can have it fixed without having to make your way to the facility. By colocating your equipment in a dedicated facility, you can ensure your equipment is in the best hands 24/7, rather than hiring specialist in-house engineers which can be significantly more expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions
We have a full FAQ located here, however here are some commonly asked questions in relation to colocation.
-
Can I provide my own IP addresses on your network?
Of course, the networking department at Coreix will be more than happy to assist you with advertising from our AS.
-
Can I provide my own power bars?
Yes, providing they are PAT tested prior to being commissioned. The technical support team on site will help you with that on the day of installation.
-
Can I use my own transit?
Of course, we can even help you arrange transit from our connectivity partners such as Level3 or Cogent.
-
What ampage do I need for my solution?
The ampage required to run your server solution is dependent on the size and processing intensity of your equipment. For example, a colocation quarter rack is likely to need 2-4 amps of power, whereas a full colocation cabinet will need between 8 and 32 amps of power. If the servers in your rack are high powered, with large hard drives and top of the range CPUs, you will need a higher ampage for your colocation rack than if you have low-end servers in your rack. To ensure optimal performance, you should ensure you stay well within your power usage limits.
-
Do I need a full, half, quarter or multi rack solution?
Whether you need a full, half or quarter rack colocation solution ultimately depends on your company's own individual needs and requirements.
Full Rack Colocation (42U/44U/48U)
Businesses needing full rack colocation are likely to require hosting for a number of servers with dedicated connections and high bandwidth requirements & are looking for full access to their own individual rack. This includes large e-commerce businesses that rely on a large amount of database processing power and large multinational companies that host their sites across the global market.
Half Rack Colocation (22U)
Half rack colocation is often used as a disaster recovery solution for larger companies as the majority of companies take the jump straight from a quarter rack straight to a full rack. This half rack will be located in an alternative data centre facility to the full rack solution, so if the worst should happen, all data can be backed up and available offsite. Small to mid sized businesses also occasionally employ half rack colocation solutions, although full rack colocation offers a better opportunity to expand than half rack solutions.
Quarter Rack Colocation (11U)
Perfect as an entry level colocation solution; combining significantly lower costs than a full rack colocation with upgradable bandwidth and power where necessary to ensure a flexible solution. Quarter racks are often lockable, ensuring extra security for your equipment. Quarter racks do have their limitations and are unlikely to be suitable for larger businesses that require an increased level of processing power or bandwidth - if you are consistently breaching your limits, quarter rack colocation becomes no longer effective for your requirements. Quarter rack colocation is ideal for smaller businesses that are looking to host their equipment in a secure facility that adheres to strict SLAs for uptime and other key variables. -
How much bandwidth is necessary for my needs?
This purely depends on what your equipment is being used for. Examples of server usage that may require large amounts of bandwidth are database driven servers (such as ecommerce sites), web servers and upload sites. Any server that is being utilised for a site with heavy traffic is likely to need large amounts of bandwidth. You are unlikely to need large amounts of bandwidth if you are running a basic website from your server or you are using your server as a backup device, as backups can be scheduled so as not to exceed limited bandwidth limits.
