In the latest “data centre in a box” announcement, HP has said that its “pod,” which is similar to Sun’s modular data centre except that it’s twice as long and boasts more and larger server racks, now works with uninterruptible power systems and water-based cooling technology from Active Power.
According to Jim Clishem, president and CEO of Active Power, his company’s power systems are about 10% more efficient than competing UPSs, which could result in about a US$1 million per year operational savings on a pod. He says Active Power’s solution can pack twice the power in half the space of other power supplies because of its use of flywheels. And while the average power usage effectiveness (PUE) of a data centre is 1.8 to 2.0, he says this pod configuration will deliver a PUE of less than 1.25.

A Green power company has won a six-figure contract for one of Europe’s largest data centres on Teesside. Billingham’s Resilient Power Solutions will install a vital battery back-up system at the EDS contact centre, on the former Samsung site at Wynyard Park. EDS is investing £30 million in the 300,000 sq ft warehouse known as Wynyard 360 at Wynyard Park and is the largest supplier of IT services to the UK Government.
Resilient Power Solutions says it is on track to treble turnover to £1 million this year as its reputation grows. The group installs technology to make high-powered IT systems more efficient, helping to slash the huge energy bills of blue-chip companies. It has developed a heat recycling system from cooling equipment, which recirculates hot air from computers for room heating. Managing director John McGee said: “The eco friendly solutions we offer are the biggest door opener we’ve got – it’s our market now. New environmental legislation is coming in all the time, so businesses have to keep on top of it.”
