The data centre is increasingly being viewed as a critical business priority. Even in the poor economy, data centres are receiving ongoing investments so they can be improved in performance and reliability, finds a new survey commissioned by CommScope found.

The “Global Data Centre Survey,” found that 32% of all organizations surveyed worldwide are planning or building new data centres, while 83% of existing data centres continue to receive investment for infrastructure and technology projects. Of the 730 IT professionals surveyed, 65% said they were required to demonstrate a specific return on the investment before their data centre projects were approved.

Government plans to make Britain a world leader in the digital economy are under threat because high electricity prices are forcing companies to locate power-hungry data centres in other countries. Under the Government’s Digital Britain report, published last month, every British home and business will have a minimum 2MB broadband link. However, Derek Webster, associate director of McBains Cooper, a building consultancy, said that British electricity prices, which are the third highest in Europe, are forcing developers to build the infrastructure needed for these plans in countries such as France, potentially undermining UK competitiveness.

Some companies, including Yahoo!, have already switched their European headquarters from London to the Continent, citing high costs and a lack of the infrastructure needed to support their businesses. Santander, the Spanish banking group, recently scrapped plans to locate a big European data centre in London, opting instead for a cheaper site in Madrid.

iWeb announced the strategic acquisition of Montreal-based managed hosting provider Netsimplify. This move brings iWeb closer to providing its own brand of managed hosting services – which represent the majority of Netsimplify’s revenues in 2008.

The transfer of Netsimplify’s customers to iWeb is almost complete, a task made easier by the fact that Netsimplify’s infrastructure was mostly collocated within iWeb’s data centres. Financial details regarding the transaction were not disclosed.
